Celebrity Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that part of his personal challenge for the new year will be learning about decentralization technology.
In a long post, Mr. Zuckerberg outlined all the things he is setting out to achieve in 2018. While he’s calling it a personal challenge, it sounds a lot more like a huge Facebook improvement project.
Part of that personal challenge has to do with him learning more about blockchain technology. Is decentralization really going to hit Facebook at some point?
Why does Mark Zuckerberg want to learn more about cryptocurrency?
During the fresh, new year, the Facebook CEO want to “fix” what he calls “important issues” that plague the global social network he helped build. In his discussion, he goes right into the topic of decentralization.
He noted how a lot of people who first got into tech really thought it would be a decentralizing force. What we’ve gotten in reality, however, has been a centralized technology sector. There are a handful of major corporations (like Facebook) at the top.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, a lot of us have lost faith in the original sentiment of tech. But he highlights how cryptocurrency is a countertrend that is putting more leverage back into the hands of individuals.
“But they come with the risk of being harder to control,” Zuckerberg added. “I’m interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.”
It will be interesting to see what he does or doesn’t come up with in the next year. A full-blown decentralization project may be headed to Facebook sooner than we think.
